Los Angeles, Aug 12 () - In Los Angeles city of U.S., an innovative water conservation project will try to protect the reservoirs in the city in the midst of the record breaking drought of California, according to Los Angeles Times’ report.
The L.A. Municipality workers dropped 96 million floating plastic balls to cover the Los Angeles Reservoir, The balls are designed to protect the water from evaporating, while covering the water against chemicals, rain and dust.
The first implementation of the project was launched in Sylmar Reservoir, upon the instruction of Mayor Eric Garcetti. Within his ‘Shade Balls’ project costing around 300 million dollars in total and 36 cents per ball, the remaining 20 million shade balls were dropped into the reservoir on August 11 with a special ceremony with the participation of Garcetti.
The project is expected to prevent the evaporation by 85 to 90 percent, and protect the reservoir from pollution, chemicals and wild animals.
According to Mayor Garcetti’s statement, the project will cost around 34.5 million dollars, and a total of 300 million dolar saving will be provided in return.
