Gülhan Demirci / Mersin, Aug 14 () In southeastern province of Mersin, goats are fed with rock salt one day a week, to boost their milk and meat yield.

Goats rose at Toros Mountain’s summit and foothills in natural environment lick mineral salt, in order to increase their appetite, boost their milk yield, and raise the fat rate of goats to raise their immunity margin against winter conditions.

“When we leave some mineral salt on the rocks, the aliveness of goats goes up. You have to take care of them like they are your child; that’s what we do here” said İdris Tong, who has been working as shepherd in the region for 40 years.

When consumed in the right amounts, salt can help goats grow faster and produce more milk. Whether the goat is raised for meat or milk, they need salt to help maintain healthy appetite and body weight, the experts say.
