Istanbul, Jan 28 () – The population residing in Turkey rose by 1 million 45 thousand people compared to the previous year and reached 78 million 741 thousand people by December 2015.
According to the “Results of Address Based Population Registration System” released by Turkstat on Jan. 28, 50.2 percent of the total population were males with 39.5 million people and 49.8 percent were females with 39.2 million people.
Thus, the annual population growth rate of Turkey which was at 13.3 per thousand in 2014 increased to 13.4 per thousand in 2015
Additionally, the urbanisation rate which was at 91.8 percent in 2014 increased to 92.1 percent in 2015. On the other hand, the proportion of population living in towns and villages was 7.9 percent.
The most populated province was İstanbul where 18.6 percent of the total population reside, reaching 14.66 million people. Ankara followed Istanbul with with 5.27 million people at 6.7 percent, İzmir with 4.17 million people at 5.3 percent, Bursa with 2.84 million people at 3.6 percent and Antalya with 2.29 million people at 2.9 percent, respectively.
The least populated province was Bayburt with 78,550 inhabitants, said the Turkstat data.
Median age rises to 31
The median age of the population in Turkey rose from 30.7 in 2014 to 31 in 2015.
Meanwhile, the median age was 30.4 for males while it was 31.6 for females in 2015. Provinces with the highest median ages were Sinop with 39.3, Balıkesir with 38.8, and Kastamonu with 38.3 respectively. Provinces with the lowest median ages were Şanlıurfa with 19.3, Şırnak with 19.5 and Ağrı with 20.3 percent.
Population in working age group unchanged
According to Turkstat data, population rate in the “15-64 working age group” was 67.8 percent in 2015 with 53.36 million population.
Meanwhile, proportion of children aged 0-14 dropped to 24 percent reaching 18 million 886 thousand people. Also, proportion of population aged 65 and over increased to 8.2 percent indicating 6.5 million people, in the total population.
Number of people per square kilometer rises
The population density indicating the number of persons per square kilometer rose by one person compared to 2014 and reached 102 in 2015.
The province with the highest number of persons per square kilometer was İstanbul with 2,821. Kocaeli followed Istanbul with 493 persons, İzmir with 347 persons, Gaziantep with 283 persons. Also, Tunceli had the smallest population density with 12 persons per square kilometer, as the previous year.
Population density of Konya, which has the largest surface area, was at 55 persons and population density of Yalova, which has the smallest surface area, was at 275 persons.
