İzmir, Oct 30 () - Two academicians in Turkey’s Aegean province of İzmir have developed a project to stop theft of bicycles on streets, with a special locking mechanism, which can replace the traditional bike locks.
The smart-lock project will offer bikers to have the solo control of their bike, while the mechanism will provide information on its location.
The project of two academicians, having converted biking to a lifestyle, have achieved to receive a funding of 75,000 liras from the Ministry of Science, Industry and Technology in Turkey.
Oğuz Gora, founder of the project and Graeme Hanssen, project associate, both professors in Yaşar University, said they have developed the system against theft and the flaws in legal procedures for owners desiring to gain their bikes back.
“Bike Inactivating System”
The “Bike Inactivating System”, different from traditional lockers with chains and cables, has parts on the wheels that cannot be removed with human’s fist force. Only the owner or user can activate the system. A sensor on an electric cart will be attached to the mechanism, hardly noticed by people, which will also convey information on the location of the bike, in case of thefts.
The mechanism is expected to weigh less than 500 grams, offering users a flexibility, said Hanssen, having decided to take part in the project particularly after his two bikes have been stolen.
“Across the globe, around 200 million bikes and in Turkey, 1.3 million bikes are sold every year. However, the measures fail to prevent a significant challenge that bikers face all around the world: bicycle stealing. Also, lockers do not have a preventive or dissuasive effect on stealers. That is why we created this mechanism” said Oğuz Gora.
The inactivating system will be totally produced in Turkey and then will be exported to other countries, added Gora.
