İzmir, Sep 18 () - In Urla district of İzmir, a seed bartering festival will be held for the first time in October, to protect and revive endangered seeds and enrich the natural wealth of the Aegean province.
The festival to be held on October 4 in Maşgaca market square, will provide the exchange of local seeds, from hand to hand, without retail.
The events to encourage seed Exchange between locals has in fact came to being in 2006, in Torbalı district of İzmir, as a law of seed growing which banned the retail of non-registered seeds. This exchange habit that residents of Karaot Village has created will now be adopted by Urla.
The genetically modified plants imported from other countries have already been revolted in Balıkesir, Fethiye, Bodrum Torbalı, Seferihisar, Salihli and Bornova resort towns.
“The idea of ‘we will exchange, if we cannot sell’ has always been an approved solution by Turkish farmers. Exchange of seed has turned into a movement of revolt and a wake-up call” said the organizers of the event, Urla City Council.
