CHP sends its own inspection group to Diyarbakır after rising violence

Ankara, July 31 () - The main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) has founded a team of party officials to investigate several fatal incidents, including a deadly attack on a public rally before the elections on June 7 and a July 20 suicide attack that killed 32 young people and the attacker.

CHP Secretary-General Gürsel Tekin will head the team that will start inspections in the southeastern province of Diyarbakır on Aug. 1.

Another team under deputy party leader Veli Ağababa will conduct inspections Adıyaman. The province hit headlines after reports that the attacker in a June 5 Diyarbakır bombing, which killed four at a Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) election rally, and the suicide attacker in Şanlıurfa’s Suruç were radicalized at a café in the province.

The CHP said in a statement that if the parliamentary inquiry proposal was approved, a team of MPs from all parties would conduct the inspection.

The party will also continue visits to all provinces across the country, it said.

The proposal was rejected by votes from the Justice and Development Party (AKP) and the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP), while the HDP supported it.

Lawmakers from the four political parties came together upon the initiative of the CHP, with the intention of discussing a terror wave by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) and the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) in the last 10 days.
