Ali Can Zeray / Edirne, Sep 23 () – Syrian migrants having been waiting in western province of Edirne bordering Bulgaria for nine days, keep struggling the harsh conditions, boosted with heavy rain, in the wrestling arena that has turned into refugee camp.
Around 2,000 migrants having been sheltering in a wrestling arena, Er Meydanı in Sarayiçi district of Edirne, as they had been blocked by the gendarmerie and police officers, while attempting to cross into Bulgaria, then other European countries through Edirne border gate.
Migrants have been craving a “good news” that would open the doors to Europe, after having fled civil war in Syria, a decision to be declared by the United Nations’ general meeting.
Syrian representatives have repeated their requests from the Turkish government and EU countries, to allow them to cross through Turkey’s western border gate.
Migrants have been gathering at certain hours during the day, to evaluate the information conveyed through social media.
A hearing impaired woman among the group urged through sign language that they have been under harsh conditions while waiting in the region, calling on officials to let the crowds walk through the gate and reach Greek border, with the ultimate effort to enter Germany.
A part of the group have been sent back to the towns and relatives that they have left to come to Edirne, while another part have been waiting in the arena to spend the feast of sacrifice, resuming their wait in hope.
Security measures to block the entrance and exits of the arena continue, led by Edirne Police Department.
