Young volunteers take turn to protect sea daffodils from tourists in southeastern coast

İbrahim Maşe / Mersin, Aug 19 () - In the Silifke district of southeastern province of Mersin, endangered sea daffodils have been put under protection by a group of environmentalist young people.

The group keeps guard of the sea daffodils and watch the coast during the busiest hours of the beach, having erected plates reading “Do not pick off the sea daffodils” and “Let’s protect the endangered sea daffodils” right in front of the daffodils.

A young volunteer 16-year-old Sıla Gürbüz has undertaken the responisilbity to organize her friends and protect the area, after witnessing that foreing and local tourists have been picking of the endangered plants.

Some other sea daffodil grounds have been protected from people with plates erected by other associations, added Gürbüz, which also inspired their project.

While sea daffodils’ extraction from the country is prohibited in the region, Gürbüz and her friends’ minor volunteer project seem to make a major impact.

Tourists have become more sensitive to the issue, according to the volunteer, and even began to warn others who attempt to pick off the plants under protection, thanks to the warning banners.
